Printed Shirts

The Print Rule

Most men own a printed shirt they rarely wear. Not because it's the wrong shirt, but because they aren't sure where it belongs. Here's the rule: the smaller the print, the more formal the shirt. Match the scale to the room, keep everything else plain, and you can wear prints anywhere.

The Office Print

01Small scale

The Office Print

Under a blazer, with or without a tie

From three metres, a small print reads as texture, not pattern, so it sits under a blazer and works with a tie. The mistake: a big print on a Monday, which reads as the weekend leaking into the office. The fix: a micro print on wrinkle-free Eco-ol Bamboo or silky sateen cotton, with plain trousers.

No tie, no jacket: the print does the talking

A geometric or patchwork print does the talking, so leave the tie and the jacket at home. The mistake: a plain work shirt to dinner, which looks like you came straight from the office. The fix: one mid-scale print in Italian cotton or breathable Eco-ol Bamboo, with dark trousers.

The Weekend Print

Short sleeves, relaxed fit, worn untucked

Go big, but pick a ground colour that calms it. The mistake: a loud print with loud shorts. One print per outfit, everything else plain. The fix: a large print on a navy or blue ground, short sleeves, relaxed fit, plain shorts.
